THE VERSE BEHIND OUR NAME
Church 2:17 takes its name from James 2:17, a call to live out what we believe.
Founded on 9 October 2026, we are beginning in the UK, with a vision that reaches beyond borders. Our first commitment is to the people and communities around us; our longer-term ambition is to share that practical love more widely, across the world.
Richard Tate founded Church 2:17. Since he became Christian, his growing faith has strengthened his conviction that Christianity should be visible in how people treat one another, through love, kindness and a willingness to help.
Richard’s vision for 2:17 is a community that puts that conviction into practice: standing beside people facing hardship, listening to their needs and offering practical support. He wants to build a church whose faith is expressed through action.
At the heart of his vision is a welcome for everyone. People of every faith and no faith can be part of 2:17, volunteer alongside its community and help make a difference.
“Don’t just preach Christianity. Show it.”

“In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.”JAMES 2:17 · NIV
Christian faith is at the heart of 2:17. Love, dignity and practical help shape how we serve, and everyone is welcome to take part.

Listen with care. Welcome questions. Recognise the dignity of each person, and meet others with kindness.
Give time, share what we can, and respond to needs around us. Turn a good intention into a helpful action.
We are starting in the UK, supporting people facing poverty, hunger and homelessness. Our volunteers are already involved in this work, and we plan to widen our reach as 2:17 grows.
People of every faith and no faith are welcome to help. What brings us together is a willingness to show love and kindness through action.

No. Christianity inspires our work, but you do not have to be a Christian to belong, volunteer or receive support. People of every faith and no faith, including atheists, are welcome. We want to show love and kindness to people, whatever they believe.
Gathering times and locations have not yet been announced. Confirmed details will be added here as the church develops.
Our volunteers are already involved in food banks, family poverty, homelessness and soup-kitchen work. To join us, offer your skills or ask how you can help, email info@217.church.
